WSP Environmental, London, UK Oct 2003 - Feb 2005 |
Head of Financial Risk Management
Following my time at URS I moved to WSP Environmental (part of the WSP Group) to head up their Financial Risk Management unit. My role is to take forward and develop new financial products to assess and manage environmental liabilities. In essence this entails the application of established financial methodologies (such as Monte Carlo simulation and decision tree analysis) to the field of environmental assessment and management. The ability to assess and manage enviromental liabilities at a strategic level allows efficient allocation of resources, balance sheet clarity and transparency, and management buy-in with regards to environmental risks. WSP's excellent knowledge of the financial solutions market have lead to close partnerships with a number of key players allowing us to offer a complete liability management solution.
WSP recently launched 'Active Transfer' which is a environmental liability buy-out tool which transfers all environmental liabilities attached to a site (or portfolio) to WSP in perpetuity. This innovative product is based on an American idea called Exit Strategy which was pioneered in the States by our partners TRC.

URS Corporation, London, UK Oct 2000 - Sep 2003 |
Mergers & Acquisitions and Audit Team
I joined URS when it was still Dames & Moore after completing my MSc. My primary focus during this time has been to serve our Legal and Financial client base in the City through the undertaking of Environmental Due Diligence assessments. Since being at URS I have successfully managed over 50 due diligence assignments (and conducted over 200 desktop studies and 100 dataroom review) for a variety of clients in various transactional situations. My projects have varied from detailed reviews of refineries to due diligence assignments encompassing up to 200 sites across the world. I have also conducted environmental assessments across Europe (including Sweden, Poland and Benelux), India, Guyana, and the UK.
Working in URS has given me the opportunity to undertake assessments, and present findings to the highest levels of both advisors and management. Not only has this given me the confidence to deal with most commercial and technical situations, but it has also given me the ability to distill and tailor vast amounts of information to produce a high quality, targeted and effective solution.
Recently I have become increasingly involved in financial modelling which has led me to work with some of the most productive fund managers in the UK to assess their environmental liability within portfolios using a bespoke financial and risk based model (Crystal Ball). In most situations, the outcome of the modelling excercise is used in negotiations (if within a transaction framework) or to obtain appropriate environmental insurance cover.
